Wilson’s Disease
Wilson’s Disease is a rare genetic disorder in which excess copper builds up in the body. Normally, the liver filters out extra copper and releases it into bile, which is excreted from the body. However, in Wilson’s Disease, the liver fails to eliminate the copper properly, leading to its accumulation in the liver, brain, eyes, and other organs. Over time, this buildup can lead to severe organ damage.
The condition typically manifests between ages 5 and 35 but can occur at any time in life. If left untreated, Wilson’s Disease can be fatal due to liver failure or neurological complications.
Ayurvedic Concept of Wilson’s Disease (Tamra Roga)
In Ayurveda, Wilson’s Disease can be understood in the context of Tamra Roga, where there is an imbalance in copper metabolism, leading to toxic effects on the liver, nerves, and other tissues. The accumulation of copper is viewed as an imbalance in Pitta Dosha, which governs metabolism and digestion. This Pitta imbalance, combined with impaired Agni (digestive fire), leads to the improper handling of metals like copper within the body, resulting in tissue damage and dysfunction.
Signs and Symptoms
- Liver symptoms: Jaundice, fatigue, abdominal pain, swelling, and cirrhosis.
- Neurological symptoms: Tremors, difficulty speaking, muscle stiffness, poor coordination.
- Psychiatric symptoms: Depression, anxiety, mood swings.
- Ocular signs: Kayser-Fleischer rings (brownish or greenish rings around the corneas).
- Other symptoms: Anemia, bone and joint pain, kidney dysfunction.
Pathogenesis in Ayurveda
From an Ayurvedic standpoint, Wilson’s Disease is viewed as an imbalance of Pitta Dosha affecting Rasa Dhatu (plasma tissue) and Raktha Dhatu (blood tissue), disrupting the body’s metal-handling mechanisms, particularly copper. This disruption is linked to impaired liver function, improper detoxification processes, and accumulation of toxins (Ama) in vital organs. The disease affects not just the liver but the nervous system (Majja Dhatu) as well, contributing to neurological symptoms.
Ayurvedic Treatment Possibilities for Wilson’s Disease
Ayurveda offers a comprehensive approach to managing Wilson’s Disease through detoxification, balancing the body’s metabolic processes, and enhancing liver function. The primary goal of treatment is to reduce copper accumulation, support liver health, and improve neurological function. This is achieved through a combination of personalized herbal medicines, Panchakarma therapies, and lifestyle adjustments.

Panchakarma Therapies and Their Role in Treatment
Panchakarma, Ayurveda’s powerful detoxification protocol, plays a critical role in the treatment of Wilson’s Disease. By eliminating accumulated toxins (Ama) and improving liver function, these therapies help bring balance to the Pitta Dosha and promote copper excretion.
- Virechana (purgation therapy): Helps detoxify the liver and reduce excess Pitta in the body.
- Basti (medicated enema): Helps balance Vata Dosha and promotes healthy digestion and elimination of toxins.
- Nasya (nasal administration of herbs): Beneficial for addressing neurological symptoms by enhancing brain function and relieving mental fog.
- Abhyanga (oil massage): Helps improve circulation and reduce neurological stiffness and tremors.
